A bargain book from the brilliant 'Tattered Cover' bookstore in Denver, CO. This looks good, a modern classic(?) set in rural Iowa where i'm off to today for business, and made into a film with Depp & DiCaprio (Gilbert & Arnie). How many reasons does a person need to read a book!

(18/12) This is a gloriously individual family saga about the famous Grapes of Endora, Iowa (pop. 1,091 and dwindling). Although we see the claustrophobic backward Midwest town through the eyes of Gilbert, it is his family who steal the show; soon-to-be-eighteen ‘retard’ Arnie, grossly obese mother Bonny, dead father, capable Amy, absent Larry, wildly pubescent Ellen and escapee Janice, the clever one. The sub-plot about GG falling madly in-fatuation with Becky from Ann Arbor who eats men, is a bit too odd and spiky to totally engage the reader.

I won’t give away the great ending, although suffice to say, GG finds what is ‘eating him’, the family discover the means to escape their shared past (and bleak future)…we can only hope.

This would make a great film. My, I believe it is already a film! This is now on my must-watch list.
