Indifferent by choice, indecisive by nature, Maria ploughs her way through fifteen years of womanhood, unable to see what all the fuss is about. Will she ever be able to direct the course of her own life, or will it end as it began - accidentally? Jonathan Coe's first novel.

Quite a brave and quirky novel for a new writer, and a 26 year-old man to boot; funny and insightful in parts, but ultimately quite sad IMHO. This is the story of Maria, sometimes told in 1st person, but often Coe as the narrator adding editorial asides. She is a serial underachiever, both professionally and socially, and suffers from an almost pathological lack of drive, emotion, ego/self-awareness(?)…hence ‘accidental woman’, life happens to her! Although, JC tries to inject a little bit of hope at the end, Maria returning home and leaving behind some childhood baggage, she also abandons youth and all expectation of happiness :(

Thanks again MrsD - now ready to pass on.

In some parts an amusing book, but in others I really wanted to shake the main character. A slight story with many human observations. To be placed on Bookmooch for a short while, then if not claimed off to London Convention.
