Book Description:
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history.
In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected President. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial “understanding” with Adolf Hitler, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

For one boy growing up in Newark, Lindbergh’s election is the first in a series of ruptures that threaten to destroy his small, safe corner of America–and with it, his mother, his father, and his older brother.

A well-crafted parallell story of what could have happened in the USA during the first part of the WW2 if Lindbergh had been elected president, and it gives the human perspective, seeing it through the eyes of a young Jewish boy. It's a very interesting read, but I felt it lacked some feel for the characters and read much like a historical account. Also, the ending was a bit disappointing, but nevertheless, an good read, and well worth for people interested in this historical period.

This book is now travelling to Sweden to fulfil a wishlist wish! Happy 2nd bookcrossing anniversary, and I hope you will enjoy the book! :)

Written like an autobiography, this novel portrays an interesting alternative history. Like any normal autobiography, there are periods where life is dull and the story becomes a little slow, but overall the book is quite readable. One thing I particularly liked about this, is the fact that the author included a section at the end relaying the actual history. It saved me lots of googling time!

Read as part of '1001 books...' I've read Philip Roth before and enjoyed his work but I struggled reading this one - if i'd done some background research before starting I might have found it more interesting but I just felt it was a bit slow. Re-listed on BookMooch.

I picked this as an introduction to Philip Roth's work (a friend warned me Portnoy's Complaint would be too much for me!) It's a great blend of big atmospheric ideas overlaid with the little and domestic, which really heightened the tension and the uncomfortable nature of the plot ideas. I think this is a really important book to read again in this day and age, to consider just how easy it might be to have a very different atmosphere in society for many people!

Sent off to another bookcrosser out of the Oz VBB.
