Winner of Edgar and Shamus awards for best first novel. Good writing, interesting plot, unsympathetic detective. Obvious where "love life" was patched in because, apparently, editors are sure that detective novels no longer sell without.

This is book #1 of the Alex McKnight series.
Alex is an Ex-cop who lives in Paradise AKA Northern Michigan. After his partner was shot and killed, he quit the force and is now a PI. Currently working for a lawyer. Lane Uttley
It took until about the 1/2 way point before the grab happened and then I was taken under. Read so fast to find out what happens next.
I would have given this a 5, however, it was a bit slow at the beginning and then the resolution was slightly unbelievable.
I’m also not sure if I really like the main character. He is a little rough around the edges and weak.
I will definitely continue the series. It’s intriguing.
