In the summer of 1920 two men meet in the quiet English countryside. One is a war survivor, living in the church and restoring a historical walll-painting. The other, too, is a war survivor, camping in the next field in search of a lost grave. And out of their physical meeting caomes a deeper communion, with the landscape, with history; and a catching up of the old primeval rhythmns of life - past and present - so cruelly disorientated by the Great War.

This is my favourite book so far and I read every year - I have a best copy in my personal library. Every time I read it I find something elese to cry about and to laugh at.

Picked this up because a) Booktwitcher said it was one of her all time favourites, b) it's short with a large typeface and c) it's a post-WWI story.

May take me a while to get to as I have too many BCers books on Mount Toobie!

A good read but unfortunately I didn't get as much from it as Booktwitcher!

In fact I found the author a little inconsistent. Some parts were easy to read with excellent (dry) humour, but in other parts I had to re-read sentences more than once to understand.

Truth be told, I did read a couple of other books in the middle of this one, which meant I couldn't remember some of the detail (like who was who!). Maybe I should have read it again!

From the blurb I expected the Moon and Birkin characters to become a bigger part of the story than they did.

was a nice little story I enjoyed very much reading.
I think the main theme is the momentariness of life.
Very romantic.
