"Mary Lawson's debut novel concerns a young woman, Kate Morrison, a zoologist who is hundreds of miles away from her childhood home of Crow Lake in the isolated regions of northern Ontario. Yet she can't escape the memories of her past, the car accident that killed her parents, her older brother who took her out to the pond to teach her about the wildlife there, and the violence of the neighbors whose lives were intertwined with her family. Embarking on a new love, Kate must come to grips with her past to fashion her own future. This novel has received high praise from almost all reviewers. The Washington Post calls Crow Lake, "the kind of book that keeps you reading well past midnight; you grieve when it's over."

EDIT 15.12.2007

It was interesting to read about the Morrison and Pye family living under hard circumstances in Nothern Ontario farming community. The narrator is Kate Morrison, who tells about her family’s life after their parents’ death. It is a story about sacrifice, surviving, missed opportunities and familial love. At the end of the story Kate has to face the fact that life does not go straight ahead and that there are more important values in life besides education: to love and care unconditionally.

I really enjoyed reading this novel. I liked the writing style of Mary Lawson.

According to the backcover: "Lake Crow is the kind of book that keeps you reading well past midnight; you grieve when it's over. Then you start pressing it on friends." -The Washington Post

That is exactly what happened to me. But because this is a bookring book I only can send it forward.I am from countryside myself and familiar with the theme of education. Besides that the book is fascinating. I couldn't tell until very end, what was the family tragedy that the narrator was referring to through whole story. Also I loved the description of Northern nature especially that of ponds.I love Mary Lawson's style to write and her sense of humor.

An enjoyable read. I was immediately engrossed in the lives of the characters. It delves into the depths of family relationships, expectations and love. What one person sees as tragedy another sees as life. Thought provoking.

I have PM'ed honey1982 and will post when I have her address.

Opps. Forgot this book was suppose to travel. I loved it! It was one of the best reads I have had in a long time. I intend to pass it along to my mom first and then share with others before releasing it.

A couple of my favourite quotes:

"He told me that for all creatures... the main purpose in life was to reproduce. I remember being puzzled. It seemed strange that something should exist only in order to cause something else to exist. It was unsatisfactory... Rather pointless"

"Generally speaking, the farmers' wives I knew had more education than their husbands. It was considered a good arrangement; the wives did the farm accounts" - Isn't that interesting and very true in many instances

And one of my other favourite parts is when Mrs. Stanovich makes the girls their birthday cakes and thinks to send one to school and then "disolves" when Bo gets icing in her hair. The parallel between the sugar and her falling apart is wonderful.

Of course I loved the pond and everything it represented to Kate and the story in general. Thanks so much for sharing.
