This stunning collection of essays really picks out 'the numinous in the everyday.' Jamie considers Darkness & Light, visiting neolithic Maes Howe in the Orcadian winter; Findings musing on a gannet's skull and the island flotsam where it was found and Fever, the taut spider-web attention you pay during life-changing events like the serious illness of a loved one.

Her language is pared down and exactly apt, holding up the objects of her gaze like the specimens in Surgeon's Hall, Edinburgh, subject of another of these essays.

Findings is a worthy companion to Travels in the Drifting Dawn by fellow Scot Kenneth White, my favorite book of all time.

Looks interesting but I need to let some books go on their travels!
