Journal Entry 6 by WormyOne from Brighton & Hove, East Sussex United Kingdom on Friday, September 18, 2009
Many thanks to scotsbookie for enabling me to cross this one off my wish list.

The blurb reads:

"A Whitehall civil servant shoots himself. As the ramifications of John Ducane's inquiry spread - girls, whips, murder, blackmail and black masses - Ducane finds himself more trapped than trapping.

In contrast to sweltering summer London, Octavian and Kate Gray's adoring community on the Dorset coast seems idyllic...but the after-effects of the suicide are soon poisoning an atmosphere already electric with adolescent quarrels and sexual intrigue.

Its compelling plot and admirably marshalled cast - existing in full complexity of motive - firmly place
The Nice and the Good amongst the most rewarding, entertaining and good-humoured of all Iris Murdoch's fiction".

Journal Entry 7 by WormyOne from Brighton & Hove, East Sussex United Kingdom on Monday, November 30, 2009
This is an enjoyably humorous tale of sexual intrigue, revolving around the people living with, or visiting, the Dorset holiday home of a blissfully (though not faithfully) married couple. The characters are variously entangled with each other, or wishing to be so, and their passions are reflected in the blistering summer heat.
