I finished reading this today for my Kiddie Lit class. Very powerful reading. The children had to grow up fast to the hard truth of the way things were at such a young age. It will keep you holding your breath and turning the pages until the very end.

I'm giving this to my daughter now for her collection of Newbery Award winning books.
