I got this book from Montana through Ebay in April, 2001.
c. 1976 -- ALA Notable Book -- New York Times Book Review Best of Children's Books, 1970-1980 -- 1977 Newbery Medal award winner -- #52 on The 100 Favorite Novels of Librarians list
Back Cover: With the land to hold them together, nothing can tear the Logans apart. Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? It takes the events of one turbulent year -- the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black -- to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride -- no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away.

I finished reading this today for my Kiddie Lit class. Very powerful reading. The children had to grow up fast to the hard truth of the way things were at such a young age. It will keep you holding your breath and turning the pages until the very end.
I'm giving this to my daughter now for her collection of Newbery Award winning books.
