Canadian writer Mary Lawson's debut novel is a beautifully crafted and shimmering tale of love, death, and redemption. The story, narrated by 26-year-old Kate Morrison, is set in the eponymous Crow Lake, an isolated rural community where time has stood still. The reader dives in and out of a year's worth of Kate's childhood memories--when she was 7 and her parents were killed in an automobile accident that left Kate, her younger sister Bo, and two older brothers, Matt and Luke, orphaned. When Kate, the successful zoologist and professor who is accustomed to dissecting everything through a microscope, receives an invitation to Matt's son's 18th birthday party, she must suddenly analyze her own relationship and come to terms with her past before she forsakes a future with the man she loves. Kate is still in turmoil over the events of that fateful summer and winter 20 years ago when the tragedy of another local family, the Pyes, spilled over into their lives with earth-shattering consequences. But does the tragedy really lie in the past or the present? Lawson's narrative flows effortlessly in ever-increasing circles, swirling impressions in the reader's mind until form takes shape and the reader is left to reflect on the whole. Crow Lake is a wonderful achievement that will ripple in and out of the reader's consciousness long after the last page is turned. --Nicola Perry, Amazon.co.uk --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I found this captivating. It is a beautifully written story, the language is uncomplicated and clever. My favourite quote that really drew me in "Bo stuck her thumb in her mouth and started sucking it, balefully, with a regular clicking noise, like a time bomb biding it's time."
I am going to pass this to my MIL then my SIL and then I'll release it. They will both really enjoy it but are unlikely to journal it... :(

Glitter Lover,

what a sweetie you are! There I was feeling absolutely miserable when through my letterbox popped your lovely book. I shall thoroughly enjoy reading this, just as soon as I finish the two I'm reading now. Then again, maybe I could be persuaded to put those on the bank burner...

Thank you for your thoughtfulness, it's much appreciated.

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! I too loved the way the author used language, her description of the 11th Commandment made me laugh, my family was like that too.

It provoked deep thought, gave wisdom, amused and beguiled, it was just a brilliant story. I loved the way it ended, not with the main character being put in her place but rather with her still mulling it over and exploring where her thoughts originated and why they were no longer relevant which is true to life. We all assess and reassess as we mature.

I'd love to see a sequel that deals with her development on the educational side of things as her ability to share the love of her chosen subject emerges, perhaps starting with the hesitant student and another that deals with the development of her relationship with Daniel that would also involve some family interaction.

Thank you so much for sending me this special book. I will continue the good deed and RABCK it on!
