Synopsis (from Barnes & Noble)

FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN ADAMS

Winner of the 1982 National Book Award for Biography, Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as a masterpiece by Newsday, it is the story of a remarkable little boy -- seriously handicapped by recurrent and nearly fatal attacks of asthma -- and his struggle to manhood.

His father -- the first Theodore Roosevelt, "Greatheart," -- is a figure of unbounded energy, enormously attractive and selfless, a god in the eyes of his small, frail namesake. His mother -- Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt -- is a Southerner and celebrated beauty.

Mornings on Horseback spans seventeen years -- from 1869 when little "Teedie" is ten, to 1886 when he returns from the West a "real life cowboy" to pick up the pieces of a shattered life and begin anew, a grown man, whole in body and spirit.

This is a tale about family love and family loyalty...about courtship, childbirth and death, fathers and sons...about gutter politics and the tumultuous Republican Convention of 1884...about grizzly bears, grief and courage, and "blessed" mornings on horseback at Oyster Bay or beneath the limitless skies of the Badlands.

Biography

It’s a rare historian who can write books that appeal to a huge popular audience while sacrificing none of his integrity as a scholar and researcher. But David McCullough has managed just that. In his thoughtful, considered, and intensely readable histories of American events and figures, McCullough has become one of our most trustworthy – and fascinating – chroniclers of our nation’s life and times.

About halfway through the book. Wanted to make a note here for future readers that the book features a candid discussion of TR as a youngster with a gun shooting over 100 birds in a single summer. Also his brother Elliott hunting tigers and elephants and skinning them. It bothered me and I expect to see more of the same in the rest of the book.

This book is about the whole dynamic family in which Theodore Roosevelt was raised. They were an amazing bunch with a great altruistic streak that led to many good works, including the founding of the Museum of Natural History in NYC. In time, this covers the Civil War up through TR's run for mayor of NYC at age 28. Although he grew to warrant the cowboy reputation, TR lost a little of it in my eyes when I found out he initially arrived in the Badlands with a Bowie knife engraved by Tiffany. I was enthralled by the character of Bammy and saddened to learn of the tragic young life of Eleanor Roosevelt, TR's niece.
