Enjoy 7 thought-provoking stories that employ charm and humor to examine relations between the sexes from a feminist perspective. In addition to the title story, an 1892 classic that recounts a woman's descent into madness, this collection includes such masterful stories as "Cottagette," "Turned," "Mr. Peebles' Heart," and more.

I've just read The Yellow Wallpaper (my 101st of the 1001!) on the bus on my way to work this morning. I'll keep the book in my inside pocket and probably read the other shorts in it over the next few weeks on similar journeys.

I've set up a bookray for this:

I read the title story of this collection very recently because it is in Emperor-Fool's book which is circulating for crafty alteration.
It was equally powerful the second time around.
Fortunately, some of the other stories in the collection are lighter and less harrowing. Having read some rather feminist critiques of the first one, I was a little concerned this might be too much for someone who tends to take the campaigning of the women of the past rather for granted, but there were downtrodden men being liberated too by the end, and the balalnce made me smile.

I have ekranda's address already so ...

The Yellow Wall paper:

I enjoyed this short story; it allowed the reader to watch the main character gradually descend into madness. Reading between the lines I suspect the route cause may have been postnatal depression as a baby was mentioned a few times with little desire to be with the baby too. Obviously with short stories one must only assume as details are not always provided.

I enjoyed the writing style of this piece and the imagination used with regards to such a common object, wallpaper. I also felt I was able to sympathise with the main character who became lonely and isolated making her mental health condition far worse.

Three Thanksgivings:

This was a well written short story showing the need for independence in later life. The main character was provided with three options by others with regards to her future and was able to come up with a completely different solution that indicated all parties totally underestimated her. Loved it!

The Cottagette:

This short story has a bit of an ironic twist to it. Woman wants to marry a certain man, she makes certain changes to her behaviour which impacts her life in a negative way and she discovers that the man preferred her before she made all the changes after all. A sweet tale.

Turned

A short tale about a pregnant maid and her strong, intelligent mistress. Another read that I enjoyed!

Making a change:

This is a tale about the importance of getting on with the mother-in-law! Once communications got sorted out all issues were resolved and the husband was clueless!

If I were a man:

Didn’t enjoy this one as much as the others but provided insight into the views of men at that period in time.

Mr Peebles’ Heart:

A very sweet story where a very patient man finally gets to make some life changing decisions in order to improve his life. His sister in law also helps out with his wife’s attitudes too.

~All in all a delightful read. Thank you so much for sharing it!
