I found this book in the vintage section at the Literacy Council's Forget-Me-Not bookstore on Gaffney Rd. I love the cover art of this "Gothic Romance". It isn't at all what I would call romance though. There was no heaving and sighing. It was a great mystery and they ALMOST had to call in Scottland Yard! It's a first printing August 1965- originally sold for 50 cents. It's about Jessica, a beautiful young girl with black hair and piercing blue eyes framed by curved black lashes. After her monthers death it was discovered that her father was a gypsy and his family wants to claim her. She is sent off with her new family but she still longs to be treated as gentry and not as a dirty, theiving gypsy. She refuses to accept that she is one of them. She finds she does possess the gift of the "voices" though and people pay her hoping to be able to talk to their lost loved ones. One such customer (cute guy with dimples of course!) just happens to be a scientist and is determined to find the origin of these voices. She is in danger though... Somehow, in a twist of fate, the beautiful gypsy with the raven black hair and piercing blue eyes becomes a "sudden lady" of Everingham Manor but "there was evil {afoot LOL) at sinister Everingham Manor-and it threatened Jessica with sudden death!"

This was a good read but the book is pretty fragile. We must be careful with it or it will be joining the "voices" from beyond the grave!
