Watership Down has a lot to answer for. So many people have tried to write animal-story-from-animals'-point-of-view novels, and so few have succeeded. Unfortunately this book, about a group of stray cats whose territory is invaded by another gang, has to be counted as one of the failures.

At the end of the book, one of the cats contemplates his life: "Where was he going? What had he gained? ... What was it all about?" And that's very similar to the feeling I had at the end of the book - what was the point? An ok idea, but only averagely executed (the narrative voice kept departing from the cats' point of view, which broke the already fragile illusion every time), and while the dramatic tension built nicely over the course of the novel, its resolution was a total let-down, and spoilt all that had come before.
