Watchmen

Alan Moore's famous "deconstruction" of the superhero genre, worth every bit of praise heaped upon it. The story is set in an alternate history, with costumed crimefighters having played a major role, but now gone underground after being made illegal. The book starts with one of them getting killed, and there are indications that someone is hunting these "masks".
This book just deserves to be read again and again. There is always something new to pick up when looking at things from different angles. Parallel storylines often mirror each others' themes, with narrative fitting well into either one. The prime example of this is the pirate comic whose tale of a marooned seaman neatly reflects into the fates of the various characters.
