Thought I'd have a little read of this in bed last night while hubby was out, and ended up finishing it! A tale of infidelity, love, betrayal, regret and forgiveness this is the type of tale one expects of Winterson. The tone is personal, even intimate, as the narrator (gender undeclared) weaves a tale of lust and love.
From the back: Written on the body is a secret code only visible in certain lights: the accumulations of a lifetime gather there. In places the palimpsest is so heavily worked that the letters feel like Braille. I like to keep my body rolled up away from prying eyes. Never unfold too much, tell the whole story. I didn't know that Louise would have reading hands. She has translated me into her own book.
Written on the Body is a love story; the narrator is a vulnerable and subversive Lothario, gender undeclared. Generous in scope, sumptuous in detail, Jeanette Winterson has fused mathematical exactness and poetic intensity and made language new.
