A little gift from the Overal foundation... hopefully, a good read in the car towards Konstanz, and to be released there in OBCZ Destille.

As you can see, no release in Konstanz - did not finish the book in time...

I liked this book a lot, although it made me a bit sad at times. Definitely a good read, very recommendable, especially if you like China.

I've been wanting to read Amy Tan for a long time, and this is great! I started reading on the train home to Düsseldorf and very much liked what I found.

Simply beautiful. Very sad but stunningly beautiful.
I took rather long to finish this book, even though I spent quite a lot of time reading -- not a book that goes down too quickly, even though it certainly isn't hard to read. This intricately woven family history that starts with with the present-day Chinese-American narrator, but really develops into the life story of her mother in (pre-)WWII-China captivated me all the more because of the little I knew about more or less contemporary life in China.
The last year or so of my life seems to have been definitely Asian-themed (taiji- and qigong class, acupressure, reiki and a Buddhist monk for my new boss), but this is a facet of Chinese culture I knew practically nothing about -- all the scarier because this is the "real", tangible side of Chinese culture that I missed.
Certainly not a moralising book, but one that does create awareness -- I wouldn't have thought it possible that one person can bear so much humiliation for the sake of what is proper in her society. Weiwei's decisions may be hard to swallow for a Western person, but they are easy to follow, as Tan always gives enough cultural context even for readers completely unfamiliar with pre-Communist China. And at least for me this great story was all the more touching because it is hinted it might be more than just a little autobiographical. Heavy stuff.

Took it back to Graz from Linz, sorry Kris!
Either I'll read it myself, or I'll first give it to a friend of mine who is studying Chinese and has actually been there last year.

LEST! LEST WAS EUCH IN DIE FINGER KOMMT, setzt euch kritisch damit auseinander!

Wow, I must have had this book lying around for over a year and never got around to journalling it. I used to love Amy Tan's books, so I was actually looking forward to reading this, only waiting for the right moment and the right mood. Now, almost 50 pages in, I must admit I no longer get a thrill from these all-too similar topics any more. It's sad, in a way, but it's okay. I guess I'll take my other Amy Tan books to a BookCrossing meetup some time, so I'll have some more space on my shelves for those books that I just can't let go.
To be re-released. I hope it will make lots of new friends out there (who will write entries, too). :)
