Another one left by Mike on his recent visit from Oz. I think he told me that this author was one of the best, and if anyone wanted an introduction to this genre, it was a good place to start. Didn't take him up on that, sorry!

Oops, it was me that took this, then forgot to register it on arrival back in Edinburgh in mid January, apologies! I distinctly remember that I found it on Thursday the 27th December when I nipped into the Belmont Cinema Café while enjoying a jaunt out on my own. I shall pop back to scribble a review, I am sadly out of tune with my Christmas time reviews not having a pc & easy internet access on hand till now. Really enjoyed this and would dearly love to lay hands on the next in the series!

Book cover: The first volume in an epic two-part fantasy of devotion, destiny, and perilous magic from one of the most honoured writers in the field – multiple Hugo Award-winning author Lois McMaster Bujold. Troubled young Fawn Bluefield seeks a life beyond her family’s farm. But enroute to the city, she encounters a patrol of Lakewakers, nomadic soldier – sorcerers from the northern woodlands. Feared necromancers armed with mysterious knives made of human bone, they wage a secret, ongoing war against the scourge of the ‘malices’, immortals entities that draw life out of their victums, enslaving human and animal laike. It is Dag – a Lakewaker patroller weighed down by past sorrows and onerous present responsibilities – who must come to Fawn’s aid when she is taken captive by a malice. They prevail as a devastating cost – unexpectedly binding their fates as they embark upon a remarkable journey into danger and delight, prejudice and partnership… and perhaps even love.

There isn’t much Sci-Fi on my bookshelf as to be honest I’m hugging my favourites close, and so far anyhow only registering Sci-Fi books I am planning to give away through bookcrossing. Right enough general chit-chat and back to discussion of this book, The Sharing Knife. Like the best of fantasy writers Bujolds writing is deceptively easily read, yet carries conviction. The characters have depth and the plot line which fascinates and entertains, left me clamouring for more. I did love this and wonder why I have no recollection of being bowled over by this author’s work before now? I used to devour Sci-Fi and fantasy but have been giving mystery and crime fiction lots of time over the past number of years, Well, time comfortably interspersed with detours into literature and popular fiction works. The Sharing Knife: Legacy - is out in paperback in May 2008 I think?

This was my first read of the 'Romantif Fantasy' genre. I found it a quick read. Hopefully I'll come across the second volume so I can finish the story.

I really did enjoy this book; to re-iterate what previous journallers have said it is indeed an easy read and the characters are very deep and complex although I felt the love story was a little rushed and then took over the entire book - I really wanted some more bogle bashing to be honest but I am looking forward to reading the next installment and hope it has more action this time.

planning to release at the next Edinburgh book crossing meet up.

Picked this up at the meetup. I should try to read a little more fantasy, given that I love Trudi Canavan's stuff so much. Thanks Free-Spirit2000.

Where did the plot go???? It went missing about two thirds of the way in and sadly still hadn't been retrieved by the end of the book. It all started off great, with plenty of bogle bashing, wannabee ravishers and excitement. Things became slower in the middle third, but that's what middle thirds are for after all. But just when I though we were entering the next stage of the Sharing Knife plot, it disappeared and was replaced by 150 pages of pure romantic fiction. Now romantic fiction is all very good and well (I thought Dag was cute too) but some action - please! I don't want to spoil the ending for future readers, but the book's final climatic tussles were a real letdown. Where were the bloody bogles when you needed them to provide some danger???

Nevertheless, I'll put the second volume on my wishlist. I want to know how the story manages to progress.
