This book, is a model for what humanity should be, and a commentary on how we treat each other globally, and how that effects the world.

Winner of the Kiriyam Prize (The Kiriyama Prize is an international literary award given to books which will encourage greater understanding of and among the peoples of the Pacific Rim and South Asia) for non-fiction in 2007.

The story starts as young Greg Mortenson, a former army medic and nurse, stumbles ill and exhausted out of the mountains of Pakistan, after a failed summit bid on K2 (the world's second tallest mountain, and by many accounts more technically difficult that Everest, the tallest). After losing his way to the city he planned to go to, he arrives in the small remote village of Korphe, where he is sheltered and cared for during his recovery. He soon becomes very attached to the people of the village. While there, he tries to provide whatever medical assistance he is able to, and soon is dubbed "Dr. Greg". Appalled that the children study in an open field, he makes a promise before leaving, to build the village a proper school.

For many, the story would stop here, but not for Greg Mortenson. For him and his organization, this is where the story starts. Along with Jean Hoerni, he co- founed the Central Asia Institute, and has been working to educate children in that region ever since.

A remarkable story, filled with interesting people and encounters. Well worth reading!

What a shame - I just couldn't find the time to finish this wonderful book! But since I'm the first of many participants, I don't really want to stall this bookring before it even got started properly. I'll just have to buy a copy of my own some time... Thanks a lot for sharing, teenie-k!

Journal Entry 13 by katrinat from Southend-on-Sea, Essex United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 19, 2009
Wow!
What an excellent read, that man is a hero and should definitely get a Nobel Peace Prize. I looked him up on the internet and it says he has now built 78 schools, plus built and helped many other projects. I will be buying a copy for myself to get my friends to read.
Thanks for sharing, sorry I took so long to get to read it- life has been hectic to say the least. I have the next address so this will be sent out on Friday when I can get to the postoffice.

I thought an update might be appreciated.

This book is the next one I will start. I have two books that I have been readinf concurrently and hope to finish at least one if not both before the end of the weekend.

I have started the book and find it very interesting so far. I will try to read as quickly as I can.

May 12: I read this while on the elliptical trainer today. I got to where the village elder was showing Greg their school and telling him teacher was $1/day
May 14: The materials for the school have been bought and they are leaving to go build the school
May 15: The supplies are across the River from the town
May 16: Greg has just been given the red velvet boxes contents

Journal Entry 21 by NMReader from Herndon, Virginia USA on Tuesday, May 18, 2010
First I want to thank teenie-k and WingedMan. I want to thank teenie-k for starting the ring and WingedMan who had told me how wonderful this book was and that I should read it.

I also want to thank teenie-k for being very understanding of the ups and downs the books had with me and a cross-country move. I am so grateful that you kindly gave me the time to read this once it was found and gotten to me.

This book touch me greatly because I agree if you want to change the world you take care of the children (feed them, cloth them, educate them, and give them security). I also am very concerned about how woman are treated.

I know that Greg Mortenson is human and has faults but I respect him for his commitment and fortitude in keeping a promise that many would have shrugged off once warm and happy at home.

The book describes the beauty of the region and the perils and challenges that Greg Mortenson face. It is part travel guide, part spiritual enrichment, and part action adventure novel.

I would like to highly recommend that we all do at least one of the 9 items listed in the acknowledgements section for those the book inspired to do more:
1 Visit the website www.threecupsoftea.com
2 Suggest the book to friends, family, book club, etc
3 Check if your local library has it. Donate a copy
4 Encourage independent bookstores to carry
5 Write a book review for online bookstores/blogs/etc
6 Ask local paper to do a review of the book
7 Get local schools involved in Pennies for Peace (www.penniesforpeace.org)
8 Make a tax deductible donation ($1.00 will pay for a month of a childs education or a day of a teacher's salary, a penny will buy a pencil)
9 Direct the media to [email protected]

I have decided I can do most of the items above. 1. I plan to visit the website this evening. 2. I plan to email and call several friends and tell them how I enjoyed the book. 3. I plan to buy several copies and donate to several libraries (public and private). 4. I haven't gotten my bearings on independent bookstores here but I will be happy to do so when I have. 5. I am writing a review now and will go to another place and write another review. 7. I am going to suggest Pennies for Peace as something my nieces' and nephew's Sunday School classes can do. 8. I have been pondering the amount of my donation since I learned he was building whole schools for $12k.

I am also further supporting the effort by reading Stones for School.
