The action in this novel is restricted to the events of one day in central London, punctuated by the chimes of Big Ben. It is a richly-textured impression of the cross-currents of sophisticated social life.

I’ve just finished Mrs Dalloway, I can’t say it was uplifting or pleasant but it was interesting. Although it is said that Woolf derided Joyce’s Ulysses, and the Hogath Press, which was owned by Woolf and her husband, turned down the chance to publish it, the structure and the style are firmly based on Joyce’s masterpiece.

The story is spread over one day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway. By using streams of consiousness to link every element in the story, Woolf succeeds in creating an effortless, flowing narrative right through the story. And just like Joyce she comes full circle, through the roles of the Prime Minister and Septimus Warren Smith, one of the sad characters who people this story and through each of the many other characters connecting and mingling in some small way. By the end of the day we will hear of Septimus again, though Mrs Dalloway will never know how she shared a few moments of his sad life.
