The first thing I was thinking after closing the book, was "Pity, that Irene Nemirovsky didn`t live to finish it!" Very gifted writer who would have most surely developed her talent if her life was not taken so early and brutally.

I must admit that I warmed to the book gradually. In the first 150 pages I had the feeling of too much carefully chosen details, too much polyshed style. It was evident that Nemirovsky was very careful about her pen. She tries to develop multiple lines in the story, and manages it quite well but I really got into the story when she focused on Lucille. Nemirovsky paints so delicate the feelings, the subtle psychological changes, attitudes, nuances! She offers a very interesting and unusual view point towards war and occupation, and she also challenges the ordinary conception of "enemy" and "hate". I`m sure the novel would get more and more interesting and complete if it only was finished! The project was indeed very ambitious and it was such a luck that the manuscript survived and reached us!

Thanks for sharing "Suite Francese"!

To say that it´s a masterpiece, would be an understatement.
On its way to phylwil, who´s really looking forward to it.
(Actually, the next participant after me is pjmom8025. Only, I haven´t been able to find any BXer under this screen name, so I´ve PMed thursoexile to check if there might be a spelling mistake. As I haven´t heard from her, I´ve decided to PM the next participant, phylwil. Either way, the book would have ended up in the US).
