This Book is Currently in the Wild!
2 journalers for this copy...
Bought from the Books and More bargain bin specifically to release (so I can keep my copy!).
This is not a novelisation of the film, and neither was the screenplay an adaptation of the book - instead, the two were written simultaneously, as a joint effort between Clarke and Kubrick at first, and then, as they realised their working styles were incompatible, as two separate projects. As a result, although the basic storyline is the same in the book and the film, the details of how that story is interpreted can be quite different in places. Personally, I think both film and book were the better for the split - the incomprehensible final sequences of the film make a lot more sense in the book, and the slow start of the book is much more interesting in the film. Actually, I think the ideal would be to watch the first half of the movie, and read the second half of the book :-)
As a bonus, included in this edition are the two short stories 2001 was based on: 'The Sentinel', and the lesser-known 'Encounter in the Dawn'. I actually thought they were a lot better than 2001 - in fact, I'd reccommend reading them before reading 2001, so that their endings aren't spoilt for you.
