Recommended by a friend. Synopsis from powells.com: Chinua Achebe's first novel portrays the collision of African and European cultures in people's lives. Okonkwo, a great man in Igbo traditional society, cannot adapt to the profound changes brought about by British colonial rule. Yet, as in classic tragedy, Okonkwo's downfall results from his own character as well as from external forces.

This is quite different from any other book I've read. It is an interesting story but almost painful to watch the tragedy that you just know is going to happen. This is not some romanticized view of aboriginal cultures. As the cover notes say, the story "reveals Achebe's keen awareness of the human qualities common to men of all times and places."
