Amazon.co.uk Review Extract:

In August 1992, W.G. Sebald set off on a walking tour of Suffolk, one of England's least populated and most striking counties. A long project--presumably The Emigrants, his great anatomy of exile, loss and identity--had left him spent. Initially his tour was a carefree one. Soon, however, Sebald was to happen upon "traces of destruction, reaching far back into the past", in a series of encounters so intense that a year later he found himself in a state of collapse in a Norwich hospital.

It took me a while to get into The Rings of Saturn. Whilst I found the sheer quality of Sebald's writing to be dazzling, to begin with I found myself sighing and skim-reading the sections where his mind went off on a tangent. Later on I began to get it a bit more and quite enjoyed the tale of the French aristocrat in exile and the country vicar's daughter. Sebald's descriptions of Somerleyton Hall and in particular Dunwich blew me away - the detail on the once-great sea port of Dunwich was all new to me, and I thought I knew a reasonable amount about the town that now lies under the waves. So despite the slow start, I enjoyed this and will definitely read Vertigo once I get round to it.

Registered this for booktwitcher who expressed an interest at the Chelmsford Meet last night! Will save it for her.

In my TBR pile. Thanks turquoisefloyd
31/12/07 Have spent the Christmas Hols reading this and a Minette Walters.
Loved its meandering style - it was like having a fireside chat with Sebald, with the reader's comments being something 'I often wondered what happened.. or what else do you know about'. I am going to offer to my friend whose daughter is studying pschology at uni - I think she may like this.
Change of plan friend's daughter can wait. This may be the start of a bookring, passing onto philolexia via turquoisfloyd.

Bookring from booktwitcher. Had hoped to enjoy at least descriptions of the lovely Suffolk coast, and have made several attempts to read it. The passive style is deadly. Makes Orhan Pamuk read like a gripping page-turner. Back to its owner it goes.

I found this a bit strange to begin with and hard to read but I did settle into it. The author (a German academic living in England) tells of a walking tour of Suffolk, places I know like Southwold, Dunwich and Orford. As he goes his mind wanders into all sorts of unrelated stories of people and histories and he goes into some depth into these. Great descriptions of the bleakness I if some sections of the Suffolk coast. Some dense writing but interesting once I got into it.

This book has been on my wish list for ages so it was quickly snatched off the book buffet at the uncon and I started it straight away. It might be a book that I put down and keep coming back to but I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.
