Doesn't live up to the film, 8 Nov 2006
By Spike_Tsunami (UK) - See all my reviews
Alan Dean Fosters novel of Aliens (much like his first and no doubt the third) didn't really hold up to the might of the movies. Whilst it holds true to the general story, most (if not all) the details such as deaths and small events are pretty much all different. Even the final battle with the Queen is vastly different to the awesome sequence of the movie and not to mention Wierzbowski's much increased part in the first section of the movie like the original draft of the script.
Foster also babied the dialogue, with 99% of the bad language being removed. Had this been intended as a kids version of the book, that may be forgivable, but unfortunantly not this time when so much of that added to how the troopers were feeling and how they were in personality and most of all the fact they were a bunch of death-dealin' hard nut all go Marines who couldn't care less what they said.
And where was "Game over man! It's game over!"? No where...the other well known Aliens quote was again butchered with a missing word that made that sentence what it was. Instead of the well delivered and fighting "Get away from her you b*tch!", we get a simple "Get away from her, you!" like a parent telling off a small child.
Over-all, average, a good read but because of my love of the movie, not one I'll revist any time. hopefully my next book, Alien³, will be some what more entertaining before I go back to the non-movie based ones.
