What a lovely package to come home to. I've barely been able to read a thing recently but as Canongate were good enough to send this, it'll go to the top of Mount TBR.
Many thanks
It took me a while to get round to reading and I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I'd been able to dedicate larger chunks of time to it. I loved the start, the way the language was pared down to the essential facts, reflecting what we knew of Emily and her love of facts and then moving onto her fascination with all things holy and evil.... but then it went down hill from there.
I found Santi's character 2 dimensional and Emily's blind and pathetic naivity when she had enough support from Mother Agata to be a stronger - well irritating and a bit unconvincing. I was frustrated by the way the subplots with the orphans failed to really go anywhere.
I once confided to a director friend that when reading scripts I would sometimes wonder if the piece was pure genius that I was too ignorant to see or just rubbish - she said that if it comes across as rubbish to you then that's what it is. I wouldn't say this book is rubbish, but sadly it's not the work of genius I was hoping it might be.
I will release soon.

I was given this book by a friend (Sophie who wrote the last entry).
I am really not sure what to make of this book......At first I enjoyed it and was kept gripped wondering how it would all pan out. I then ended up feeling disappointed that things were not explained properly and you were left wondering if you had missed something! I felt more and more frustrated with Emily and her actions and more and more bemused by Santi. I think just a few extra details and explanations could have made this a significantly better read. Maybe it is best suited to those who are more creative then myself and who can make their own assumptions?
I would not read this again however I am sure it will appeal to some. Will be leaving on my train home this evening towards Sutton.
