'Westall triumphs: the texture of his medieval world and the tension of his plotting makes this far-fetched adventure wonderfully credible.' BOOKS FOR YOUR CHILDREN

'This absorbing book with its gallery of vivid characters culminates with the move inventive, best-described battle I have ever read.' THE SCHOOL LIBRARIAN

What a very strange tale... The magical, mystical Miw fight for their lives... The Seroster, a human, almost, fighter for the City & its rightful Duke... the Amies Deschats. I was so fascinated that I had to finish but it wasn't an easy read.

This is a children's book & I can imagine they'd like it very much as it does have a fairy tale quality to it - the original gritty, bloody kind of tale.

the blurb:
Cam didn't want the knife the blacksmith gave him - and when the blacksmith crumbled to dust before his eyes he was even more reluctant to take it, even though it did have an uncanny ability to find its mark. He didn't want to take the blacksmith's letter across marsh and desert to the Seroster, either.

Cam solved problems. A letter written here, a town drain sorted out there - the young student was happy to wander about earning what he could. The blacksmith's message, and his weapon, didn't suit Cam at all. But however hard he tried, he couldn't rid himself of either. Miserably conscious of compulsion, he finally reached the Seroster's town - and the great golden cats were waiting for him.

It was the cats, the Miw, who had rescued the boy Duke when his father was murdered. They were utterly opposed to Little Paul, the cunning, evil usurper, and his henchmen. From the most ancient times they had owed allegiance to the Seroster, the legendary hero and leader who appeared when the city was in trouble.

When Cam found the Seroster and, horrified and reluctant, realised the magnitude of the task that lay before him, it was the Miw - Amon, his friend and guide, Sehtek, who lead the Miw, wise Smerdis, who saved his life, and all their brethren - who gave him the help and comfort and courage that he needed.
