On the Road (Penguin Modern Classics)

The publisher's information on the back says:
The sticker on the front claims The book that shaped a generation turns 50. I can understand that people growing up in the shadow of the Second World War in America, who understood the cultural references and who could guess at the Beat- and Jazz-slang might have found this an extra-ordinary book, but I think it was a book of its time and place. I'm not from that time and place and this book really isn't my cup of tea. I just couldn't identify with the characters, or understand the point it was trying to make. It's another stream of [semi-]consciousness, like Ulysses.
'It changed my life like it changed everyone else's' : Bob Dylan
On the Road swings to the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, generosity, chill dawns and drugs, with Sal Paradise and his hero Dean Moriarty, traveller and mystic, the living epitome of Beat. Now recognized as a modern classic, Kerouac's American Dream is nearer that of Walt Whitman than F. Scott Fitzgerald's, and the narrative goes racing towards the sunset with unforgettable exuberance, poignancy and passion.

Hi Everyone,
My husband found the book on his desk at work. Since he had already read it, he gave the book to me. That was in Noordwijk, Holland. We now are in Spain, so I shall leave the book somewhere in Madrid, Spain.
This is a well written book. Jack Kerouac is ofcourse a excellent interperter of the human soul. Having said such, I found the people very sad. Not one person had a strong moral since of self. Nor a concern for the other, being that of animal, human, property. Nor would I care to meet any one of these people. The story kept me interested, only because I wanted to see if Sal gained any sence of self respect. He did not.
