This was about 6 girls who became friends in college and have continued to meet twice a year since graduation. The setting of the book begins when they are in their late 40’s and describes the lives of these women together and apart, dealing with their own personal experiences. I thought King did an excellent job writing about southern women, with their humor, their strength and their spunk. Her writing is full of emotion and I found myself on the quintessential roller coaster ride, laughing out loud and then later with a lump in my throat. I thought this book shows immense talent in expressing deep emotion, humor and is an excellent depiction of southern fiction. I was surprised to learn she is Pat Conroy’s wife. I would definitely be interested in reading another one of her novels.

Wow! I really loved this book. I was surprised at first that the story was told from only three of the women's point of view, but I think that it was perfect. You grow to really like these women. It's a great combination of southern fiction and hen-lit. The only thing that bothered me a bit about the book was the geography... you don't just swing by the north GA mountains on the way home from Talahassee to Montgomery.

This was mailed to bethaniekay this afternoon.

The girls arrived this afternoon ... will start reading right away. Thanks!

Journal Entry 8 by BethanieKay from Melbourne, Florida USA on Monday, February 4, 2008
I finished this book last night, and have been trying to think of what to journal about it. I'm definitely glad that the story was told from only 3 of the girls' perspectives - I don't think I could have kept up with it if they all 'spoke'! :) I did enjoy the 'southern' style of writing, and the dynamics between the girls were interesting. I thought it was realistic that not everyone got along with each other (I mean, come ON, we are talking about 6 very different women here! :) and I enjoyed the humor. I guess the thing that left me very ambiguous about the book was that it just seemed to have such a sad overtone. I know that overall, it wasn't ALL sad ... but that was the taste left in my mouth. Still, a very good story and I'm so glad to finally have gotten to read it!

Thanks to acountkel for sharing and the rest of you for playing along!

I PM'd cocacolacathy a couple times over the past two weeks or so with no reply, so the ring-leader asked me to skip to the next reader. I posted this book to NMReader this morning.

Happy Travels, little book!

It is not often a book can make me cry and it is even rarer for a book to make me cry in public, but this book brought tears to my eyes this morning.

This book touched me in unexpected ways. It spoke to friendships and loneliness and the secrets we don't tell anyone.

I agree that if more then 3 of the SSG had told the story then it would have been difficult to follow. I also think that Cassandra King did a masterful job of writing about how 6 strong women interact and about the true code of the south - you may not be sweet but you most certainly have to act like you are.

My mother was from PA, so technically a Yankee, and I only grew up in a border state (MD which is just south of the Mason-Dixon line) but my mother did instill one of the southern women creeds into me - a lady might think it but she doesn't say it. I also learned at a very young age you could say almost anything about anybody if you prefaced it or ended it with "...bless their cotton-pickin' heart..." (in some places cotton-pick' is pea-pickin')

I enjoy this book and will seek other out by this author. I was interested to learn that she is married to Pat Conroy. I may have to read some of his and see if they influence each other.

Thank you very much acountkel - I would never have picked this book up off a shelf in a book store. I did enjoy it very much

Arrived in the mail yesterday. I should be able to start reading it in the next couple of days. After reading the other JEs, I'm looking forward to reading this book.

Journal Entry 17 by dabercro from Clinton, Utah USA on Thursday, April 17, 2008
I really enjoyed this book! I loved the enduring friendships these middle-aged women have had together over all the years. As stated in an earlier JE, they did not all get along but "when the chips were down" they were there for each other.

Thank you acountkel for sharing! The girls are off to visit spoiledrotten in New Jersey tomorrow.

Received this a couple of weeks back and started reading it a few days ago - just never got around to journalling it.

As it is part of a bookring, it will get the necessary attention it needs to be read as quickly as I can and then sent off to the next person.

Will journal again when finished.

Journal Entry 22 by spaceystacey from Bridgeton, New Jersey USA on Saturday, April 11, 2009
Received in the post today. Will be reading in May. Thank you for sharing what looks to be a wonderful read.

05/04/09 Just started reading this one and it seems to have a nice flow to it. What a nice premise that these friends are indeed still friends 30 years after first meeting. I really enjoyed the writing style: telling the story from the voices of three of the 6 women. I agree with the others here who have said if there were more perspectives it would have been more challenging to keep up.

It is very realistic that these woman do not always see "eye to eye" and get along at all times but they do rally together when they need to do so. The strength of all these women is remarkable, I found.

I hope to finish before the week's end and post out to Colorado.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It has a bit of the Now and Then feel (the movie), although not so upbeat. This book is a bit of a downer. I cried a lot through this book, and I wanted things to work out better than they did -- Still a strong read.

I have PM'd Wandering-B, but haven't heard back. Will try again.

This little book has been here longer than I anticipated. i enjoyed the story very much, and the telling of it by three different women's point of view was interesting. The idea that good southern girls are raised to be nice and polite is so true. You can get away with saying just about anything about anyone as long as you add bless their heart - as if they can't help it. Anyway, lovely story with a rather sad outcome. Loved it! I'm checking with acountkel to see where it is to go next.

Thanks all for sharing.
