When you're fifteen, of course, you don't quite believe that things will change, alter, end. You can't imagine that you might not always go down town on Friday nights; that you might not one day possess cheap dangling earrings as heavy as gobstoppers, silver-blue eyeliner, or a pair of woven-soled espadrilles. You can't foresee thins, Sally, for instance, did not know that she would one day be the mother of her own fifteen-year-old girl. And that she would be a Needlewoman. Needlewoman, homelier sister of Wonder Woman. An award-winning Needle-woman, even. Who'd have thought it?

******

Part of my haul from the staff book grab at the Edinburgh Book Festival.

Not my usual kind of read but there was something pleasing about the cover so I decided to give it a go.

It's a fairly gentle tale, I particularly liked the flashbacks to Sallys schooldays and her memories of being in class with her best friend, exchanging notes and giggling over random things, it reminded me greatly of my schooldays and being in class with my best friend, exchanging notes and giggling over random things. It also made me appreciate that my best friend from school is still my best friend, many years later.

I was very excited at finding a bookcrossing book when I wasn't even looking for one. I was in the Birnam Institute in October and saw it on a table beside some tourist leaflets
It was a really good book, jumping backwards and forwards between the present day and when the main characters were only 15. I liked the twist in the story near the end, it just shows how quick we are to jump to conclusions

I am going to give this book to my sister when we see her on Christmas eve, She is an avid book crosser so I am sure when she has read it she will either pass it on or release it into the wild.

Was in my local Barnardos charity shop and spotted this. Picked it up because I liked the look of it. Very excited to find it is a bookcrossing book. The shop had taken out the label, but luckily the BCID was written inside. It's my second catch in the wild after about five years of bookcrossing! I usually pick up other BC books at meet-ups or at OBCZs.

I really enjoyed this story, partly because it showed you situations from a different point of view, for example, Rowena's experiences as a teenage mum. Like Pumpkinhead I also enjoyed the bits about messing around in school and having laughing fits with your fiends. Will get this one travelling again soon.

Arrived this morning, thank you Bookfrogster :-)
I'm looking forward to reading this.

This was a very gentle story that took its time to slowly develop characters and plot. I liked the way the story flipped between present day and teenage years and, even though it was about embroidery, it did keep my interest throughout. (I am not a needlewoman!) I wish we had heard more of Rowena’s story – still possible, I’m sure, without revealing the twist at the end.
Sending on to herrgirl as soon as I get an address.

Received today, thanks, wilksie, for sending it on. I love the pretty bead bookmark which I assume is travelling with the book. I have another ring book waiting till I've finished my current read, then will get on to this one.

Hmm, didn't do much for me. I didn't think the characters were particularly well-drawn, especially the men, and saw the cause of Sally and Rowena's loss of friendship coming a mile off. I did enjoy the references to the Brownie handbook, and the bits about their life as schoolgirls, which brought back memories. But overall I was a bit disappointed.

I will PM beebarf for her address.

I signed up for this bookring because for once, the heroine stitched! Yay! It wasn't a craft relegated to the genteel young ladies in Jane Austen, or to a granny. And it wasn't that new fangled trendy knitting either :o)

That's the good point. The bad point - well, there isn't really one, but there's no great highs and no great lows. It's a gentle read, toddles along quite nicely and that's about it ... I did think that the voices in the chapters weren't particularly distinct, but I suppose you could say that's what you get when best friends are talking.

Already have GlitterLover's address, so posting this out in about 10 minutes!
