Journal Entry 1 by BookCrosser from Culemborg, Gelderland Netherlands on Wednesday, September 19, 2007
Synopsis: On a wintry evening in 1941, Dr. Lachlan McCready is on his rounds in the remote Scottish village of Rassaig when he comes across a silent, frightened evacuee boy who is trying to survive in one of Rassaig's poorest homes. Lachlan, also scarred by loss, sees that desperate times call for desperate measures and decides to take him under his wing. Meanwhile, down the road, some very different newcomers have turned up - three English land girls have come to help' much to the delight of the young men and to the consternation of the local religious firebrands. Soon it becomes clear that these four strangers will change the village forever as the war that had seemed so far away begins to cast its long shadow over windswept Rassaig.

take it to the meeting
Got it at the meet-up in Castricum.
This took me a little while to get into. The beginning of the book felt stilted in style , but maybe that's just meant to be Lachlan's voice. I also wasn't that taken with the switching between past and present tense within the same paragraph. But I persevered and I'm glad I did. There's a lot going on and the book touches on some difficult issues and there are some harrowing moments. But there is goodness shining through it all. And in the end I liked it a lot.
This is going to travel as part of the 'military themed' bookring. It has 'war' in the the title and the author's name is Cannon, so it fits the theme well!
I choose this one from the 'military themed' bookring.
I'm glad that I picked up this book. This is a clever and honest analysis of the human so different characters and behaviors.
I'm going to choose it for my March offer in greenbadger's "One book a month offered 2018" thread.

When I received a second copy of this book and wanted to copy my comments here, I realized that I had not journaled my impression. I thought I did. Maybe, it forgot to save when I typed the entry last time or the website was misbehaving. I seemed to recall composing the comments.
Anyway, here's the comment just written for the other copy: "So I will write them here as I only read the book last month and still remember my impression. I liked the book in general, it was slow paced but the characterization and the setting was great. I also agreed with the other bookcrossers who found the sex scenes unnecessarily explicit. I am not offended by all explicit sex scenes, but when they appeared in this book, they did not appear to be coherent with the other parts and style of the book and I found them interfere with the narration rather than adding to it."
