I took this from the Old Hall ecological community library in exchange for another book.
Most of the stories are so short that I thought they were amusing anecdotes that lacked depth, but some of the longer stories were really good. As a whole, though, they present a worthwhile look at the time (the end of the 19th century in the South of the USA) when emancipation of blacks and women was just starting to be things that might be discussed in public.
After reading the introduction I also recognize that I hadn't taken enough account of how daring they were at the time, and what subtlety went into saying something that would evade the censorship of publishers and the reading public, and was still worth saying. I would like to read her later novels.
