From back cover:
It's 1984 and one of the hottest summers that Yorkshire has seen. In a small market town where nothing ever happens, fifteen-year-old Mona is passing the time drinking, stealing and playing fruit machines. Things are going badly in the pub where she lives with her obese stepbrother Porkchop. Then Mona meets Tamsin, a sassy beauty with an actress mother and a sister who's died of starvation. Their friendship is immediately kinetic, but the woozy, claustrophobic heat is starting to get to them...
Surreal and more than slightly disconcerting... I think I preferred the film.

Thanks for bringing this to the meet yesterday.
Gritty Northern tale. I didn't like the beginning and would probably have given up if I hadn't been on a train with nothing else to read. Got better near the end.
