My second attempt at Cormac McCarthy and definitely my last. You can get used to the lack of punctuation and sentences that last 1/3 of a page, but I just feel like his storytelling ability is waaayy over-rated. He takes boring subjects and makes them even less interesting. I had hopes for this plot (a father and son walking across post-apocalyptic America) but I'm yet again disappointed by the novel. Time after time, they come to "a city", "a river", "the eastern side of a mountain range" but I was hoping to see how New York City fared... why wouldn't he say, even once, "could this city on a river possibly be El Paso?" Nothing but walking through un-named countryside in this book makes for a very long read.
Of course, that's just my opinion. I guess Oprah liked it, and so did many critics, so I'm wild releasing it in hopes that it will find someone who appreciates it.

Exceptionally depressing book. However, I literally could not put it down and read it in one Saturday-morning sitting. I found the writing poetic and the father-son relationship heartwarmingly realistic. But I probably won't read any more McCarthy--I really prefer more up-beat books.
I got the book from the person who picked it up at Long Draw Pizza. Just happened to be walking by her table at the Starlight Theater and she was 'moved' to pass it on to me. It's marked "traveling" because I will pass it back to someone else who was at the table, so it will stay in Terlingua for a while.

The descriptions of the places they entered was the best part for me...the Grey-Ness of the whole thing kind of enshrouds your vision while you read this somewhat gruesome tale...his language and technique lead you into a visceral and visionary world which, while somewhat depressing, teems with rich detail...
