The Heartsong of Charging Elk
5 journalers for this copy...
Charging Elk, an Oglala Sioux, joins Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and journeys from the Black Hills of South Dakota to the back streets of nineteenth-century Marseille. Left behind in a Marseille hospital after a serious injury while the show travels on, he is forced to remake his life alone in a strange land. He struggles to adapt as well as he can, while holding on to the memories and traditions of life on the Plains and eventually falling in love. But none of the worlds the Indian has known can prepare him for the betrayal that follows.
Good read. Interesting story. Not one I had thought about. Sad and yet okay. I am always amazed that there are those who are white who feel they are above or smarter or more entitled than those who are not.
As I think of Charging Elk being a Lakota and the Dakota Pipeline issue I am saddened that nothing has really changed.

Sending to the winner of the Export an Animal Sweepstakes! Enjoy!
Oops, this looks like a hundred hankie -book. And being left in France in the 19th century must have been an ordeal as as late as 1986 nobody in the tourist info of Gare de Nord (central railway station of Paris) spoke English.
Making more than a mental note that I've tagged Poodlesister with this book, so it goes up on the hills of Mnt.TBR. Will be seeing Poodlesister in London Town next month.
Edit: Tried the book out, but even the prologue was so depressing that I decided just to give the book on to Poodlesister. When I was little I was always on the Indians' side when there were westerns on telly. It is so sad what happened to them - and to buffalos.

The book has arrived safely. Thanks also for the bc labels. Sounds like you had a good Christmas as did hubby and I. We've not got anything much planned for New Year though as storms are forecast so it may be breaking open a bottle of wine, watching a bit of tv and/or reading a book.
Best wishes to you for 2018

At first I struggled with this book. For around the first four chapters it was really keeping my attention but I persevered and I'm glad I did as I eventually engaged with the main character and started to enjoy the story and I liked the gentle and completely believable ending.
