A sad, though sometimes funny, study of sexual dysfunction. Its narratorial presence irritated me with constant contexualising of the early 60s setting. I couldn't help thinking of a sort of Ian McEwan/Larkin lolcat: HAI I IZ BETWEEN CHATTERLEY BAN AND BEETLZ 1ST LP. Though it's interesting to see an asexual character so sympathetically portrayed, I felt McEwan doesn't avoid a certain kind of misogyny in his characterisation both of Florence and other female characters. Most of the misogyny swishing about is Edward's, admittedly, not his creator's, but not quite all. Finally, the resolution of the narrative only convinces in terms of suitably plangent Booker-nominee prose, not at the level of character or social context.
