Manhattan 1945 and US Army journalist Jack Malone gatecrashes a Thanksgiving Eve party. Set amidst the dynamic post-war optimism and subsequent nightmare of the McCarthy witch-hunts, this acclaimed story of love and betrayal is a tale of divided loyalties, decisive moral choices and the random workings of destiny.

This book was responsible for the ironing not being done, the seedlings in the greenhouse needing water, us eating at the pub last night and some serious neglect of household duties by me. I started reading it in bed Monday night and finished it yesterday at 4:30 as my son appeared on the doorstep expecting an evening meal. It isn't great literature but it is a gripping story of human frailties and I really enjoyed the emotional turmoil of it all.
