The Three Musketeers

I don't imagine that this needs much introduction. There cannot be many people who are not aware of the story of D'Artagnan and his friends Athos, Porthos & Aramis. There have been many film adapatations for starters - the best starring Michael Yorke.
Don't let the size of the book or it's reputation as a "classic" put you off though. It is a rollicking read from start to finish. Sure, the novel has a compelling plot, but what I loved about it was that Dumas writes with a wonderfully light touch - the reader is never allowed to take the characters too seriously, even if the characters themselves often do. The chapters are short too (a by-product of the fact that Dumas wrote the book originally for publication in installments in a periodical), and the pace is kept high throughout.
A great, great book. I read it reluctantly, but when I had finished, I went straight out and bought the other books in the musketeer cycle (Twenty Years After, Le Vicomte De Bragelonne, Louise De La Valliere and The Man in the Iron Mask).
I release this book into the wild with love and hope it finds a good home.
