from the back of the book:
"On an icy winter night in an isolated house in rural Vermont, a seasoned midwife named Sibyl Danforth takes desperate measures to save a baby's life. She performs an emergency c-section on a mother she believes has died of a stroke. But what if Sibyl's patient wasn't dead - and Sibyl inadvertently killed her?"

What a great read. Telling the book from the daughter's point of view tells a whole different story than if the book were written from Sibyl's perspective. It also made me, as a reader, sympathize with the family and what they were going through - which made the last chapter seem like somewhat of a surprise.
I will be mailing the book to a family member in Ohio.

sent the book to an anonomous reader in Ohio
Received the book in November from an anonymous reader in OH. I waited to journal to see if she was going to journal it (she is not a BCer but I was hoping she would still journal or possibly join).
I liked the way the book was written from the daughter's perspective years later. She would often talk about how she felt as a child going through this but now as an adult looking back she could see things differently. I also liked the way each chapter began with an excerpt from the mother's personal notebooks. This also gave us the mother's perspective. I was not totally surprised by the last chapter. I felt that it was alluded to in the later chapters of the book. All in all a great read!
Mailed to whitehorsy yesterday, the winner of Gahan's Birthday Sweepstake. Congratulations!!
Thank you dabercro, for this wonderful surprise. I've not yet read this book but I've heard some good things about it, so I'm looking forward to it! I'll pass it on as RABCK to someone else once I've read it. :-)

I didn't really know what to expect from this book... births and a trial... I thought it might be a bit boring, no matter all the good things I heard about it. Now I can say I really enjoyed the book, it was a real page turner! The characters are lovable and I liked that the book presented the story through Connies eyes... together with the diary notes from her mother. At the end I didn't know what the outcome would be, so I found it pretty nerveracking as well. ;-)
Thanks a lot dabercro, for this book! It'll travel further as a RABCK, to hshah in the UK, in a few days time.
