84, Charing Cross Road is a charming record of bibliophilia, cultural difference, and imaginative sympathy. For 20 years, an outspoken New York writer and a rather more restrained London bookseller carried on an increasingly touching correspondence. In her first letter to Marks & Co., Helene Hanff encloses a wish list, but warns, "The phrase 'antiquarian booksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' with expensive." Twenty days later, on October 25, 1949, a correspondent identified only as FPD let Hanff know that works by Hazlitt and Robert Louis Stevenson would be coming under separate cover. When they arrive, Hanff is ecstatic--but unsure she'll ever conquer "bilingual arithmetic." By early December 1949, Hanff is suddenly worried that the six-pound ham she's sent off to augment British rations will arrive in a kosher office. But only when FPD turns out to have an actual name, Frank Doel, does the real fun begin.

Two years later, Hanff is outraged that Marks & Co. has dared to send an abridged Pepys diary. "i enclose two limp singles, i will make do with this thing till you find me a real Pepys. THEN i will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAP THINGS IN IT." Nonetheless, her postscript asks whether they want fresh or powdered eggs for Christmas. Soon they're sharing news of Frank's family and Hanff's career. No doubt their letters would have continued, but in 1969, the firm's secretary informed her that Frank Doel had died. In the collection's penultimate entry, Helene Hanff urges a tourist friend, "If you happen to pass by 84, Charing Cross Road, kiss it for me. I owe it so much."

This book was lovely. I read it almost in 2 sittings, it was compulsive to keep reading as it was so easy to get through. The letters between 2 complete strangers that build up a beautiful friendship spanning several years should impact everyone that reads this.

I will be mailing it onto the next person very soon.

Thank you for the bookmark, what a lovely idea to include a London underground map showing Charing Cross. Unfortunately I just couldn't bring myself to underline phrases from the book but all those reading I am sure they would be thinking of the lines from the book that stand out for them too..... This stems from childhood when teachers drummed it into us at school that we were not allowed to deface a book!! Sorry! I hope you understand.

Ooops! I think this ring has come to the wrong person :)
I'll sort it out and move it on.

P.S. I read this book many years ago, it remains a firm favourite and one of the few books that I occasionally re-read.
Enjoy it everyone.

Sooo wonderful!!
I was a bit scared as I only read English book on holiday...I need lot of free time to do that!
But when I put my eyes on the first page of 84, Charing Cross Road, I just can't stop reading.
I loved it. I rate it 10, and I don't do that so often, but really!! this book deserves it.

I noticed that 84, Charing Cross Road was a real place when I had alreay read 40 pages, looking at the photo on the back...stupid, wasn't it?...but it has been a magic moment!!

A sweet and wonderful reading, it's ideal for book lovers! It makes you feel the sensation of fine book paper in your hand....And what about the bookshop? You can really imagine the tall shelves with their treasures..Love for books is the key of the friendship between Helen and Frank, in spite of their different cultural background: this reminds me of all the friends I knew thanks to bookcrossing :)
There is also a very nice film from the book, I loved it too, Anthony Hopkins is a charming Frank Doel, I hope you can see it.
Thanks very much for the ring and the bookmark, Lizzy!
P.S.Like Helen I'm out of my mind for P&P :)

I really enjoyed this book.
A mail friendship born between two persons that don't know the other writer and with the central point in books is very close to what append to me with bookcrossing.
Many thanks to Lizzyblack for reading this book is a must for a booklover. I love the smell of new books and the feeling that an old book inspires me.
