This is Vol 2 of the Great Books of the Western World Series (orig. pub. 1952, Encyclopedia Britannica.
The Syntopicon is an attempt by the publisher to extrapolate fundamental themes from the Great Books series, which they believe form the basis of Western thought, and synthesize them into articles which comprise the contents of Vol 2 & Vol 3 of the Great Books series. In doing this, they hope to show that the Great Books should be studied not only as individual books, but also as a whole, in order for one to understand the ideas that are the foundation for Western philosophy.
