I fell in love with this book! It is very long, at times I was confused with where the author was taking me with all the neat little sub-stories in the book, but by the end I didn''t want it to end!
I''ve read very mixed reviews on this book and I think it is most incredible! Well worth the time it takes to read such a long book. I already have a hardcover copy in my permanent collection and was thrilled to find this trade paperback at the libray sale for only 25 cents for bookcrossing!!

From the Publisher
Now available in paperback, the year’s most talked-about debut was longlisted for the 2004 Man Booker Prize, shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award and the Guardian First Book Award, and is a Globe and Mail Top 100 and Time magazine #1 Book of the Year, among many other accolades. Film rights have been acquired by the studio behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

This witty historical fantasy takes place in an England beleaguered by the war with Napoleon. In this critical situation two magicians arise. Mr. Norrell is challenged by the brilliant novice, Jonathan Strange, resulting in a dangerous battle filled with obsessions and secret dabblings in the dark arts.

Sorry, Minerva. . . not my kind of book! I gave it a good try! Read pages 1 - 250 or so, and then I read the last 100 or so pages. I just couldn't get into it. FYI: I didn't enjoy Harry Potter either! I will send the book on its way in town tomorrow.

This book is resident at the Parker Cove book nook. Parker Cove is a resort/retirement community outside Vernon. I am happy to have had the opportunity to read it. It is an amazingly complex and complete "alternate history". I found it strange but usually interesting, sometimes wryly humourous, and able to make one believe that some of it is true! The footnotes lend such authenticity to the fantasy. Every now and then I had to put it down for awhile, as I found my attention wandered, but I always came back. To me the ending screams "sequel!" but I can't find any info on whether she is writing more about these magicians. Allin all, an odd but somehow compelling book. I will be returning it to the book nook for someone else to discover.
