Another in Geary's unusual and intriguing series of graphic-novel-format versions of true crimes, this one focuses on one of my favorites - the case of a family who set up a small roadhouse in the Kansas frontier, and made their living by robbing and murdering (and, in some versions of the legend, cannibalizing) lone travelers... I first heard of the Benders via the Anthony Boucher short story "They Bite," in which they were mentioned in passing; since then I've read the basic facts of the case, though oddly enough it's not nearly as well known as many less spectacular cases.
This book pulls together all the available information about the crimes, the Benders themselves, and what little is known or suspected of their fates after their crimes were discovered. It's a riveting story, and while Geary's stark style tends to downplay the worst of the bloodiness, it's still the stuff of nightmares...

I'm adding this to a box of books for SqueakyChu in Maryland, for a Little Free Library (or whatever else you'd like to do with them). Hope someone enjoys it!
