Publisher's description:
"Reflections on the Rwandan Genocide
Along with nine other African Writers, Veronique Tadjo was invited to visit Rwanda to bear witness to the genocide that took place in 1994 – wiping out one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus during a hundred days of barbaric violence. A poet and a storyteller, the author consistently achieves the right tone that challenges our preconceptions. From the unexpurgated story of a young woman reliving the horrors of the massacre to dialogues between strangers meeting across the past, and finally to her own reflections. Her prose alternates between raw and poetic, but always remains discreet, respectful and dignified. The one thing that comes through her narrative voice is a ray of hope. The translator Veronique Wakerley lectures in French at the University of Zimbabwe and is particularly interested in the literature of the first part of the twentieth century."
A very hard book to read - deceptively slim - I've read it three times now. It is true the author seems to hear a lot of hope in the people she speaks with. As a Canadian though, I was thinking throughout of the concerns expressed by Roméo Dallaire who was Force Commander of UNAMIR, the United Nations peacekeeping force for Rwanda between 1993 and 1994, in his book, "Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda".
This book is now on its way to azuki.

Thank you! This book has quite an interesting travel route but is now in Florida! It has arrived for a week but I just didn't get to go to the post office to pick it up.
While this book is listed as Travel on its backcover, the author does not spend much ink describing the landscape. Rather, she concentrated her strokes on painting a colorful pictures of the Rwandans... those who survived the genocide: the victims, the imprisoned murderers, and those who did not. Each is given her/his own voice, and each voice is different.

This book arrived home in my travel narrative bookbox. This book seems to keep coming back to the Western part of North America, which is neat. Going on my tbr pile.
I struggled with this one and will be moving it along. My TBR shelf is too overwhelming and the time has come to thin it a little bit.
After a very long delay, this book is once again on the move.
