A very funny and somewhat poignant story, well-crafted and involving. If you''re English, you''ll particularly enjoy the criticism of the UK''s immigration policy and the Executive Branch''s ineffectual efforts to police it - how true! The counterplay bewteen the ''real'' story and the ''short history of tractors'' throughout the book is superb, and reinforces in a subtle way the theme of ''human goodness overshadowed by cruelty'' versus ''basic human meanness'' while making for absorbing reading. Thoroughly enjoyable.

I struggled to finish this book; definitely not my cup of tea. I did not care for the writing and had little sympathy for the characters.

I was so surprised to receive this in the mail today! I answered the "Crazy Bookish-Angel's books for postage! Prices so low they're insane!" post in the Book Wish Lists forum and this is one of two books I requested. It has such an intriguing title...Thank you so much for sending it my way Bookish-Angel, can't wait to start reading it ;)
I couldn't wait to start reading this book, seeing such good reviews by fellow BCers. Unfortunately, like Bookish-Angel, I too struggled to get through this book. The characters were mean, stubborn, and in the case of the "glamorous blonde Ukranian divorcee"...she really was a total "gold-digger who will stop at nothing in her pursuit of wealth." I couldn't care less what happened to them in the end and there are too many books on Mt TBR, so I stopped reading it.
Wrong book for me, but I'm sure the right reader will come along! Will either RABCK to someone who wants it, or wild release for one of the many challenges I've signed up for.

Yup, 'twas I that snagged this book! I've seen so many happy reader-type posts about this book on BC....I thought I'd give it a whirl. Will report back, soon.
9 August 2008 - Well, I'm going to have to join the "not the book for me" crowd on this one; it seemed to me to be heading in an obvious direction from the first paragraph & the characters & style weren't enough to keep me interested.

I loved this book. It was very well written and enjoyable to read. I will be looking online soon to find someone else who would love to read it.
