My journal entry:

Gregory Maguire impressively re-imagines the Cinderella story as it might have happened in real life. We're drawn into the world of 17th-century Holland, with a widow and her two daughters who have fled from England to seek a new life after being persecuted.

Margarethe is an awkward woman but the book gets across very well the fact that women often had to be awkward, cunning and competitive to survive in a world where they were second-class citizens. Her daughters Iris and Ruth also struggle to find their way, first in the house of a struggling artist, and then in the home of a merchant whose strange and beautiful daughter, Clara, is the Cinderella of the tale.

I loved this book for its humour, its period detail and its understanding of human nature, and was impressed that it made such compulsive reading when we all know the bones of the story already - this is down to the excellent characterisation and the way twists are added without losing the thread of the original story altogether. I really want to read more of Gregory Maguire's work.
