I have not ever been one to read much history.
I guess when I saw this book I thought it might be one that my brother would enjoy, I decided to bring it with me on a summer retreat and have to say that I was amazed at the tragedy that happened with the USS INDIANAPOLIS crew.
My heart raced as I read how these brave men endured hours of fear, hunger, thirst and death as they waited for rescuers to arrive.
Surviving the ships sinking only to be put through devastating circumstances that took over 900 lives in the 4 1/2 days these men suffered through horrors beyond my imagination.
My heart went out to the Captain, priest & physician whose lives would be forever changed through out this ordeal.
I cannot imagine the fear that gripped these brave soldiers as they waited minute by minute in shark-infested waters to see who would be the next victim.
Those that did not get attacked by sharks sank into depression, ending their lives by succumbing to the thirst that overcame them after so many days floating in the sea. Their deaths, quick, horrifying and tragic.
Those that watched while their friends sank into the depths of the sea must have wondered how long they would last before they became the next man down.
God Bless each one that gave their lives in service to the U.S.A.
Thank God these men shared their story with us so that this will never happen again. History written. Opening the eyes of the higher echelon of the Navy to change procedures so this type of tragedy will never occur again.
May God Bless each one, those who survived, those who did not.
