From the back of the book:
Orrani was collectingmshell-fish when she saw the great canoe with white clouds. Lengths of wonderful red cloth were held out over the side. Eagerly, the young men of Ataa climbed the rope ladder with their coconuts and tortoise-shell and she followed.

This is the story of Lizzie, a little girl whose mother has died and of Orrani, a young South Sea Island woman who comes to care for her. It is the story of a sugar plantation in 19th century Queensland, of contract black labour and racial tensions, of struggle and survival. It is also a love story and the story of a friendship that grew, like Orrani's garden.
