Delightful and charming novel, that describes the world as discovered and seen by a three-year old child born in Japan to a Belgian family. The main themes are self-awareness, learning a language / languages and death.

The Japanese believe that until the age of three children are gods. The narrator of the novel feels herself to be a real "lord child." On their third birthday, they fall from grace and join the rest of the human race. She has spent the first two and a half years of her life in a nearly vegetative state until she is jolted out of her plant-like state. After that her development is quick and she gains a peculiar but complete awareness of the world around her. Most fascinating to her is the discovery of water in oceans, seas, pools, puddles, streams, ponds, and, rain, one meaning of the Japanese character for her name. On her third birthday life strikes back in the form of the carp, the fish she hates.

One theme in the story is the bitterness that Japanese felt to American occupiers and all white people after 1945. The embodiment of this hate and arrogance in the novel is Kashima-san, a nanny who leaves the three year old white child in a carp pond to die.

I send this book as a birthday present to another bookcrosser.

I love Nothomb’s books. This one too. Just hilarious, all the divinity :D Only that tiny bit of Okinawa felt quite far-fetched?
