Picked this up at a fete a few weeks ago...

Gave this to Daisybadger for the epic train journey back to Scotland.

This book was first serialised in the Scotsman, and so wasn't intended as a proper novel. I should remember that and be a bit forgiving. However, for some reason it really irked me. The characters were flat and boring, a lot of the plot went nowhere, but more than that I really felt quite insulted by some of the comments and attitiudes represented in the book. I can only speculate as to how accurate I am here, but it reads as if the author has very little fondness for his subjects, that is Edinburgh or her people (Yes, Edinburgh is a woman Im sure). I wonder at its success in the Scotsman.
